The PVS10L, equipped with an automatic system for recognition of incoming preform size and type, was previewed at the K fair. No less innovative is the inspection system itself, which combines polarised light with cutting-edge AI algorithms
SACMI has made two major technological improvements to its preform vision systems. The PVS10L machine - recently previewed at the K 2019 fair - is equipped with the D.R.I.V.A. (Drive and Recognition with Intelligent Vision Algorithms) system for automatic preform recognition and size changeover.
Designed for the off-line inspection of potentially faulty preform lots, this solution has two highly distinctive characteristics. The first is its ability to combine polarised light inspection technology with cutting-edge AI algorithms: in practice, the system is able to “imitate” the work done by workers, who identify defects invisible to the naked eye using polarimeters.
The second aspect, which amazed the thousands of professional visitors to the fair, is the solution's ability to cut size changeover times to under one minute. Thanks to SACMI D.R.I.V.A., the PVS10L identifies the preform type in real time (diameters, length, colour) and automatically calls up the matching inspection recipe. A perfect response, then, to the versatility and efficiency requirements of “off-line” systems, with total automation of the setting tasks that, with alternative technologies, are generally performed manually.
What's more, the PVS10L features linear preform transfer. Gripped laterally, the preform undergoes checks on the mouth, finish and bottom before being transferred using vacuum technology and undergoing body inspection. Once all the defects visible to the naked eye have been identified the preform is checked with polarised light and the images are interpreted using advanced AI algorithms. This innovative system replaces and improves on the previous patented grid method.
Solutions like these (both have patents pending) highlight SACMI's unique ability to provide markets with state-of-the-art PET preform inspection solutions. What's more, the solution can be completed with an automatic preform positioner, allowing customers to configure the entire line to achieve fully automated process management.
